Update: What’s happened so far?

Results from the early states are bearing out the prediction that the race to the White House will be a tight one – although early exit polls are showing that the key swing state of Ohio is leaning towards the incumbent President Barack Obama.

Although candidate Mitt Romney has claimed victory in more states than Obama, the victories secured by the latter have in general carried more Electoral College votes.
Obama has also won four of the early swing states – Michigan, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and significantly Pennsylvania, where Romney has focused a lot of his campaigning efforts, including a rally in Pittsburg on the day itself. Romney himself is yet to win any swing states, although early suggestions predict that he will win in North Carolina.
Florida remains too close to call, with some anticipating just 600 votes to separate the two Presidential candidates.
