Election turnout as high as 80 per cent

The election turnout is expected to break records in several states, with figures as high as 80 per cent.

Over 30 million people cast their votes before the opening of the polls yesterday, which is almost a quarter of the total vote count for the 2008 elections.

Reports have shown a record turnout from Latino voters, which makes up the largest ethnic minority in the US.

Arizona, which has the largest number of Latino voters, has revealed the importance of the Latino vote.

An exit poll indicates that 96 per cent of black Americans voted Democrat, and that the white vote was split evenly.
